T'ai Chi DVD Review

Abs

T'ai Chi has been practiced successfully for thousands of years for health and fitness.

T’ai Chi is an internal Chinese Martial Art practiced primarily for its health benefits. Medical studies of T’ai Chi support its effectiveness as a healing exercise. T’ai Chi is also a very effective method of stress management. Focusing the mind on the movements of the form brings about a state of mental calm and clarity.

I have practiced the Yang-style for more than 20 years. T’ai Chi has always helped me feel good. It provides me with relaxing exercise that helps reduce stress. It has toned my body, improved my flexibility, and aided my balance. I believe my health and fitness has been greatly enchanced by T’ai Chi practice.

My wife and I initially took a T’ai Chi class, and afterwards we have followed Terence Dunn’s T’ai Chi for Health: Yang Short Form. Over the years, I have purchased many T’ai Chi books and DVDs; however, Terence Dunn has been my overwhelming favorite.

The Amazon.com editorial review of this DVD by Joan Price is as follows:

T'ai chi, the classic Chinese exercise for health, self-defense, and spiritual growth, is "meditation in movement”. It emphasizes relaxation, breath control, visual and mental concentration, and slow, balanced movement, explains the voiceover in T'ai Chi for Health: Yang Short Form during a 10-minute explication of the qualities, philosophy, and health benefits of t'ai chi. Meanwhile the instructor, Terence Dunn, practices on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. Dunn teaches 10 minutes of breathing and warm-up exercises. Next is a 30-minute introduction to the basic postures, then a full hour of step-by-step instruction and practice of the 37 postures of the Yang Short Form. The video ends with an eight-minute demonstration of the complete Yang Short Form, showing how the postures flow together. Altogether, you get two full hours in this unusually complete training video. The beginner gets all the instruction needed to start practicing, and ongoing students get an ideal setting for practice and improvement. --Joan Price
